St Bartholomew’s Hospital North Wing – Great Hall & Hogarth Stair

A fantastic conservation and interpretation project for Barts Heritage Trust.

Huntley Cartwright had the privilege of serving as Quantity Surveyors on this remarkable Grade I Listed restoration.

The project has brought together specialist conservation, cleaning and restoration skills, complex scaffolding solutions and environmental stabilisation techniques.

Interpretation and wayfinding, as well as improved visitor access and circulation, including disabled access adaptations, all serve to enhance the visitor experience.

We are proud to have contributed to the safeguarding of such an important piece of London’s cultural and architectural heritage.

✨ St Stephen’s Walbrook Restoration ✨

We are proud to show case the successful completion of St Stephen’s Walbrook. One of Sir Christopher Wren’s architectural masterpieces, and a cornerstone of London’s historic cityscape.

🏛️ A Grade I listed building, St Stephen’s is widely regarded as one of Wren’s finest City churches. Rebuilt after the Great Fire of London, construction began in 1672, with the now-iconic dome and Corinthian column structure taking shape by 1677. Its design as an ‘auditory church’ marked an important moment in Wren’s career - an early expression of spatial grandeur that would later culminate in St Paul’s Cathedral.

Over the past year, meticulous work has taken place to preserve and enhance the church’s remarkable architecture and historical integrity. This included:
🔹 Structural stabilisation of the tower, nave, and external elevations following progressive movement revealed by over a decade of monitoring
🔹 Comprehensive roof and masonry repairs to safeguard the envelope of the building
🔹 Intricate timber beam and plaster conservation throughout the interior
🔹 Service upgrades and fabric enhancements to improve energy efficiency and long-term resilience
🔹 A beautifully integrated new kitchen in the crypt to support community events and outreach activities

This has been a true labour of love and a great honour for our team to help conserve a site of such architectural, spiritual, and cultural significance - ensuring it remains a place of worship and engagement for generations to come.

Our thanks to St Stephen Walbrook PCC for their clear vision and collaborative approach in preserving this historic landmark.
