Bishops Waltham Palace

Location

Southampton

Role

Quantity Surveying and Contract Administration

A conservation project for English Heritage at Bishop’s Waltham Palace, a Scheduled Monument with origins in the 12th century. Once one of the grand residences of the Bishops of Winchester and later a royal lodging, the palace was partially destroyed during the Civil War and now survives as an important ruin. Extensive masonry conservation, de-vegetation and soft capping of wall heads, roofing repairs, new public access footpaths, resurfacing, and improvements to gates, fencing, and railings. Careful planning was required due to ecological constraints, with works phased around bat and bird habitats.
