London Road Cemetery
Location
Coventry
Role
Quantity Surveying
A Grade I listed arboretum cemetery and the only one ever designed by Joseph Paxton, created in 1845-46 at the height of his career. Set within a former sandstone quarry, its sweeping paths, raised promenade and dramatic sandstone walls create the feel of a grand Victorian park. Designed as a living arboretum, the cemetery still boasts many of its original rare and remarkable trees. This major restoration project revived Paxton’s vision - repairing key landscape features, historic structures and memorials - and transformed the site into an attractive visitor destination. New interpretation, education and volunteer programmes are reconnecting people with Coventry’s heritage.
