Will's story...

I studied English Literature at University and then started work with a London based developer. This role was an exciting introduction to the industry which enabled me to gain a broad knowledge of things like surveying, project management, design development and horse racing! I joined Huntley Cartwright as a senior surveyor.

Why did you choose Huntley Cartwright?

The company was attractive to me as a traditional firm, owned and run by a dynamic partnership and involved in fascinating and diverse projects. They also put great store by the chartership process.

Your route to chartership?

There were several routes open to me to gain chartership. I chose to embark on a two-year structured training programme that would build upon my previously gained experience. With the company’s support, I was able to pass my Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and I am proud to hold the MRICS designation.

Advice for others choosing this route?

If you come to quantity surveying later in life, or if your start in life like me, was on the Contractor side where less emphasis might be put on chartership, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take that step to getting yourself qualified via the RICS. It is not only the gold standard accreditation, it’s also a challenging and ultimately rewarding journey, which will bring to life everything you think you know about quantity surveying and much much more.

Final thoughts?

A career at Huntley Cartwright involves working on great projects. For me this has been theatres, sports centres, luxury houses, commercial buildings and heritage sites. There is also the opportunity to progress and continue your own professional development, all the while surrounded by good people in a fun and vibrant workplace.
